The Map to Holden's Mind par Mind Map: The Map to Holden's Mind

1. "crumby", "phony", "sex", "virgin"

1.1. EXTERNAL LINK little judgey prick that boy is, but we love him anyways!

1.1.1. Holden is a very judgmental person especially if he finds a person to be "phony", because then he will automatically dislike that person

1.2. EXTERNAL LINK When Holden wants to interact with people he doesn't call them because he's afraid of who will pick up the phone

1.2.1. Holden is constantly inferring that he is lonely and always wants to call people but will come up with random reasons to not, like when he called up "Old Luce" just because he didn't want to be alone

1.3. EXTERNAL LINK Holden is resentful of the people who treat him poorly, and the life that has thus far treated him poorly.

1.3.1. Holden is obsessed with the idea of sex, and is terrified of the idea of death because of what happened to his brother Allie.

2. Cherished Words of Holden Caulfied

2.1. Phony

2.1.1. Holden uses this word to describe a lot of people especially his school mates and teachers.

2.1.1.1. "One of the biggest reasons I left Elkton Hills was because I was surrounded by phonies." (pg.13)

2.2. depressing

2.2.1. "and I have a tombstone and all, it'll say "Holden Caulfield" on it , and then what year I was born and what year I died, and then right under that it'll say "Fuck you." I'm positive, in fact." (pg. 204)

2.2.1.1. Holden tends to assume the worst from human kind and that they're going to continue being terrible to him even after his time has passed.

2.3. gorgeous

2.3.1. "I was even positive I would be. It certainly didn't make me feel too gorgeous."(pg.196)

2.3.1.1. Holden uses the oddest vocabulary to describe how he feels, like he was talking about cancer and said it didn't make him feel gorgeous?!

2.3.2. "It certainly was a gorgeous way to talk about a Christmas tree. It was sort of funny, though, in an awful way, and I started to sort of laugh." (pg. 196)

2.3.2.1. Holden seems to find the oddest things funny, which kind of gives us a feel as to the sort of messed up way his mind seems to work.

2.4. lousy

2.4.1. "I can even read one of those lousy stories on a train at night, usually." (pg. 53)

2.4.1.1. Holden tends to use the word lazy to describe things that he doesn't like and finds stupid which is one of his interesting traits.

2.5. sexy

2.5.1. "I just like them, I mean." (pg.54)

2.5.1.1. When it comes to Holden and "sexy" he's either talking about himself or girls and how they look sexy or they make him feel real sexy

2.6. crumby

2.6.1. Holden uses this to describe a lot of events in his life that he does or wants to do even if they are so extremely out of the ordinary, including sexual acts.

2.6.1.1. "Sometimes I can think of very crumby stuff I wouldn't mind doing if the opportunity came up." (pg. 62)

3. Emotional Holden

3.1. "If I get a chance to remember that kind of stuff, I can get a good-by when I need one- at least, most of the time I can." (pg.5)

3.1.1. Holden develops connections with people and things even if he doesn't want to including school and people he didn't generally care for.

3.2. "I'd say to him, "Allie, don't let me disappear. Allie, don't let me disappear. Allie, don't let me disappear. Please, Allie." And then when I'd reach the other side of the street without disappearing, I'd thank him." (pg. 198)

3.2.1. Even though Allie passed away Holden still talks to him and finds comfort in it

3.3. "I was only 13, and they were going to have me psychoanalyzed and all, because I broke all the windows in the garage." (pg.38)

3.3.1. When Holden's brother Allie died it really took a toll on him and, I think, had a roll in his attitude when he got older.

3.4. "I was sort of crying. I don't know why." (pg. 52)

3.4.1. Even though Holden acts like he doesn't care about some things, like school, they still have an effect on him.

4. Other's Opinions of Holden

4.1. Old Luce

4.1.1. "Typical Caulfield" he thinks Holden only thinks about sex and gets way too personal and nosy with other people's lives

4.1.1.1. ""No kidding! Do you like that? Her being Chinese?""Obviously.""Why? I'd be interested to know- I really would."" (pg.146)

4.2. Phoebe

4.2.1. Phoebe seems to be one of the few people who generally car about Holden an his safety. She wants the best for him and just enjoys when he stays around.

4.2.1.1. "She took the dough off me. "I'm not mad at you any more," she said." (pg.212)

5. Little things Holden doesn't appreciate other people doing

5.1. Holden seems to have a problem with people saying "Good luck" as if that if people say that, it's like they have no trust in him and that he's going to fail in life.

5.1.1. "I'd never yell "Good luck!" at anybody. It sounds terrible when you think about it." (pg. 16)

5.2. "I hate saying corny things like "traveling incognito". But when I'm with somebody that's corny, I always act corny too." (pg. 60)

5.2.1. Holden hates when people act fake in any way when he figures they most likely don't act anything like that when they're alone

6. Although Holden is a "terrific liar" he still has many emotions, granting they go from angry to moderate to upset, I personally see Holden as more of an emotional character. He's had a rough time in his life and has special ways of dealing with his emotions especially in random bursts of reminiscing and getting upset.

7. Sexually obsessed Holden

7.1. "Wuddya mean 'philosophy'? Ya mean sex and all?" (pg.146)

7.1.1. A "Typical Caulfield" conversation consists of Holden asking people a bunch of questions about their sex life neglecting the fact that he is still a virgin and has "willingly" denied every chance he has had to have sex.

7.2. " I could hardly stop myself from sort of giving her a kiss on the top of her dopey head-you know- right where the part is, and all." (pg. 72)

7.2.1. Holden gets the badly timed sexual urges to do things that are not appropriate like trying to kiss someone that's way older than him in the middle of a bar.

8. THESIS: Holden Caulfield is a loud-mouthed, exceedingly subjective person who secretly just wants people to listen, care about, and understand him.
