Differentiating Lesson Plans to Meet Student Needs KINDERGARTEN MATH CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.B.4:Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality Objective: SWBAT understand that each number added to a group refers to a quantity that is one larger

1.1.1. Pair the below grade level student with an above grade level student and have them practice adding one more item to a group

1.1.2. Provide students with hands on activities using counting manipulatives to see how the quantity increases when they add one more. Allow them to recount if necessary in order to understand the concept.

1.2.1. Have students guess how much the quantity would be if they took one item away?

1.2.2. Practice adding small numbers together. If they understand the plus 1 sequence then maybe they can practice adding small quantities. Provide 2 groups of multiples (ex. 3 and 2) and see if they can recognize that there are 5 total.

1.3. 21st Century Technology:

1.3.1. Use ipads and educational apps for students to drag and drop additional quantities to see the increase or decrease in quantities and improve counting skills (These are great for students how are above grade level as they can advance within the game or app they are using and students below grade level can practice the concepts in a fun way to reinforce basic skills

2.1.1. Use toy cars as objects to count with

2.1.2. Bring children outside to the parking lot and have 3 get in a car. Ask them how many people there will be in the car if one more gets in?

2.2. Animals

2.2.1. Use toy animal figures for counting

2.2.2. Have children draw the stripes or spots on an animal. Ask them to draw 4 spots on a dog and ask how many spots the dog will have if they draw one more?

2.3. 21st Century Technology:

2.3.1. Play You Tube video with cars/animals so children can learn to count by watching things they are interested in

3.1.1. Provide hands on activities like stacking cubes. Students can stack one more cube on to their tower and see that is gets taller with each one they add
